Using GIMP to Convert an Image File

The texture map utilities we're using require the image file to be in SGI's Irix RGB format. The following instructions will guide you through the conversion process. Assume that the name of the input image file is foo.jpg and that you initially log in to a workstation that has the NX client software installed.

  1. From your network drive, use an sftp client to transfer foo.jpg to phoenix.

    (From a lab workstation, you may use the SSH Secure Shell Secure File Transfer client. From your own workstation, you can download, install, and use FileZilla.)

  2. Start the NX client and use it to establish an X Window session to phoenix.

  3. Among the graphics applications available on phoenix, you'll find GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). Open it.

  4. Open foo.jpg in GIMP.

  5. Use Save As to save foo.jpg as foo.rgb by simply changing the file extension.

    Along the way, you may be asked to export your image as an RGB image (do so), and you'll be given a choice of various types of compression -- choose RLE compression.

  6. Close GIMP and logoff from the NX client session.

  7. Use an sftp client to transfer foo.rgb from phoenix to the folder where you need it.
