When designing your personal web site, you have two alternatives in where
the site is stored. Either approach is acceptable to me. The first
alternative is to create the site within a folder on your G: drive. From
there you publish the site to phoenix. Open the web site on your G: drive
and then refer pp. 418--421 in the FrontPage book for publishing
instructions. The URL (location) of your web on phoenix will be
http://phoenix.goucher.edu/~username/
(where username
is
your username from the phoenix FrontPage account slip you
received). The advantage of this approach is that the world doesn't see
your web site until you've published it to phoenix.
The second alternative is to create your web site directly on phoenix. See the next section for instructions on opening your web on phoenix. The advantage of this approach is that you don't have to go through the work of publishing your web site --- it's always published. If you create your site this way, you won't be able to save images from other web sites directly into your own web site. What you'll need to do is to right-click on the image, as usual, save it into a folder on your G: drive and then import it into your web site.
Either way, the entry page to your web site must have the file
name index.htm
. To view your web on phoenix in Internet Explorer or
Netscape, just enter your URL into the browser.
http://phoenix.goucher.edu/~username/
(where username
is
your username from the phoenix FrontPage account slip you received).
After you've opened your web the first time, you'll see a shortcut to your
Web folder in the dialog box. You can open the shortcut, rather than type
in the URL.
This is a good thing to do so that you don't have too many passwords to
keep track of. I suggest changing it to your Goucher network password,
assuming that is a good, secure password. If it's not a good, secure
password, I suggest you
change them both to a secure password. If you're not sure what a
``secure'' password is, see
Choosing a Good Password
(http://phoenix.goucher.edu/password.shtml
).
