Work through these exercises. There is nothing that needs to be handed in.

Starting and Configuring Telnet

There are two ways to do this. For this exercise, just telnet directly. If you have a home PC with an Internet account, often you will telnet from your WWW browser.

Telnetting Directly

1. Open the Internet folder on the OS/2 desktop. Find the telnet application within the folder and start it.

2. If you want, you can increase the font size. From ``Options,'' choose ``Fonts...'' SystemVIO 10x18 is a good choice. Don't forget to increase the size of the telnet window after you've changed the font.

3. To connect to a telnet server, choose ``Connection,'' then ``Open session...'' Set the emulator to VT100. Host name should be filled in with the appropriate host name. Also, enter a port if one is given, otherwise the port field should be blank.

4. Click ``OK'' to open the connection.

Telnetting from a WWW Browser

1. Start Netscape Navigator from OS/2.

2. Netscape Navigator is configured to start telnet if a telnet URL is entered. For example, try entering telnet://martini.eecs.umich.edu:3000. (The last period is not part of the URL.) Note that you have to combine the access method, host name, and port (if other than the default) into the URL.

3. Once telnet starts, it can be configured following the instructions from the previous section.

4. Once you've finished and closed the session, close telnet. Find the Windows icon in the lower left-hand corner of the desktop and open it to return to Netscape Navigator.

Locations to explore

1. Telnet to host martini.eecs.umich.edu, port 3000. This server provides information, such as population, zip codes, etc., about cities and towns. The easiest way to use it is to type in a city name, state abbreviation pair. Examples:

   New Wilmington, PA
   Youngstown, OH
   Pittsburgh
   

   Here are a few of the line codes:
   1. 1: county.

   2. L: latitude and longitude.

   3. P: population.

   4. E: elevation.

   5. Z: zip code.

   Answer the following questions:

   1. What is the population of New Wilmington?

   2. What county is Reading in?

   3. How many zip codes does Pittsburgh have?

   4. Is there more than one Titusville in the country?

   When finished, type ``quit'' to exit.

2. Visit the Teacher*Pages at Penn State. Host name is psupen.psu.edu. Login using your two character state code (i.e., PA). From the first menu, choose TEACHER*PAGES.
   1. Go to keyword search.

   2. How many documents discussing HIV are available? When was the newest one posted?

   3. What is the Swackhamer essay contest? (Search ``History.'')

   4. Find three storytelling books recommended as gifts for children.

3. Find information about Federal legislation. Host is locis.loc.gov. Choose Federal legislation.
   1. Search the 104th Congress.

   2. How many bills mention Yitzhak Rabin?

   3. How many co-sponsors were there to Senator Dole's resolution on Yitzhak Rabin's life?

4. Find weather conditions. Host is madlab.sprl.umich.edu, port 3000. Choose US forecasts. Note that city names must be entered in a three-letter code and that there is a menu choice for determining the codes. Answer the following questions:
   1. What are the current weather conditions in Philadelphia?

   2. What is tomorrow's forecast for Youngstown?

5. Telnet to the Westminster library. Host name is library. Login as MCGILL. Answer the following questions:
   1. How many of Tracy Kidder's books does the library have?

   2. Who wrote ``Silicon Snake Oil?'' In what year was it published, and who was the publisher?

   3. How many woodworking titles are available?

   When you're finished, type quit to exit.

6. Telnet to Penn State's library. Host name is psulias.psu.edu. Press the ``Enter'' key when asked for your Penn State ID number.
   1. Use the ``help'' command to get general help. To get specific help:
      1. For help with authors: ``help author''

      2. For help with titles: ``help title''

      3. For help with subjects: ``help subject''

   2. What is the title of John C. Barr's Ph.D. thesis? Why was the paper copy withdrawn?

   3. How many categories are listed under the subject of football?

   When you're finished, type quit to exit.
