- Summary: using search engine queries to narrow searches.
- Introducing FrontPage lab.
Assignment: Read lessons 1 and 2 of the FrontPage text. Web searching and
evaluating assignment due in 1 week.
Specifically applies to AltaVista, but the idea is fairly general.
- What is a word? A phrase?
- By default, words and phrases are ORed.
- Use of lowercase and uppercase: case sensitivity.
- paris: paris, Paris, PARIS.
- Paris: Paris.
- Using + to include and - to exclude. Using + for AND.
- recipe cookie +oatmeal -raisin
- Wildcards:
- gold*: gold, golden, goldsmith, goldilocks, Goldilocks, etc.
- Restrictions on where to look:
- title:
- domain:
- host:
Example: Using AltaVista, look for information on Parris Glendenning's
environmental record. Start with ``parris.''
- Walk-through and explain to class.
- Do as a lab.
