Assignment: Read lessons 1 and 2 of the FrontPage text. Web searching and evaluating assignment due in 1 week.

Narrowing Searches

Specifically applies to AltaVista, but the idea is fairly general.

  1. What is a word? A phrase?

  2. By default, words and phrases are ORed.

  3. Use of lowercase and uppercase: case sensitivity.
    1. paris: paris, Paris, PARIS.

    2. Paris: Paris.

  4. Using + to include and - to exclude. Using + for AND.
    1. recipe cookie +oatmeal -raisin

  5. Wildcards:
    1. gold*: gold, golden, goldsmith, goldilocks, Goldilocks, etc.

  6. Restrictions on where to look:
    1. title:

    2. domain:

    3. host:

Example: Using AltaVista, look for information on Parris Glendenning's environmental record. Start with ``parris.''

Introduction to FrontPage

  1. Walk-through and explain to class.

  2. Do as a lab.
