Two basic types:

  1. Directory search tool. Indexed by subject matter. Example: Yahoo
    http://www.yahoo.com/.

  2. Search engine. Keyword search. Example: AltaVista http://www.altavista.com/.

Compare by: organization, ease of use, frequency of updates, filtering of entries, number of ``hits.''
