• This is a placement test, not an achievement test or an exemption exam. Students will not be allowed to register in a language course without having completed the placement test.

• The purpose of this assessment is to place you at the most appropriate level based on your present knowledge and proficiency in Italian. Wrong placement in either direction is a handicap. If you are placed in a level too advanced, you may be overwhelmed and will not be able to keep up with the class. If you are placed too low, you are wasting time and credit hours repeating work you have already mastered.

• Use of textbooks, dictionaries, notes or assistance from any other outside source is an infraction of the Goucher College Academic Honor Code. The Department of Modern Languages reserves the right to conduct an oral interview.

• Reproduction of any material on this test [including verbal discussion of the questions] is a violation of academic integrity standards.

• You are allowed to take this test one time only. If further assessment is needed, each case will be handled on an individual basis.

• No grade is given; only the recommended level of language course will be noted in your file.

• If initial results suggest that your language ability is strong enough to place out of the foreign language requirement, you will take a second exam once you arrive on campus in order to recommend the appropriate course.

• Estimated amount of time needed to complete the exam: 45-60 minutes. Maximum time allowed: 90 minutes. When you reach the time limit you will automatically be 'locked out'. Your current elapsed time will be displayed at the top of each page of the exam.

• Read all parts of the exam thoroughly and begin answering the section with which you feel more comfortable. Do not spend too much time in any one section.
